CBI urges 'gradual approach' to further EU migration

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has welcomed the government's decision to allow Romania and Bulgaria gradual access to Britain's labour market, rather than opening up immediately.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has welcomed the government's decision to allow Romania and Bulgaria gradual access to Britain's labour market, rather than opening up immediately.

Following the approval of the accession of both countries to the EU, Richard Lambert, director general of the CBI, said it was right to take this approach "until the full effects of existing migration become clear".

Mr Lambert also said the government needed to strengthen its resources to prevent the illegal employment of migrant workers and should "resist the temptation to use employers as immigration officers".

However, the CBI acknowledged that the British economy had "benefited enormously" from the skill base provided by central European workers.

"They have filled major gaps in our labour market and delivered a significant boost to the national wealth," Mr Lambert added.
